Danielle Smith’s Plastics Ban? - Ask Abe

Recap:

  1. Trudeau passed a plastics ban, labelling plastics as “toxic”.
  2. This ban was challenged and overthrown by the Supreme Court as being illegal.
  3. In Alberta, the cities of Edmonton and Calgary enacted their own plastics ban.
  4. The problem, they don’t have that constitutional authority (it is illegal).
  5. Common Sense Calgary sued Calgary for being unlawful and had the plastic ban killed in Calgary.
  6. Edmonton still has it and the mayor is reaffirming it.

When municipalities overextend beyond their constitutional powers, the province must correct them. We saw this during the COVID lockdowns: There was no provincial mask mandate yet the cities of Edmonton and Calgary passed illegal bylaws enforcing them; illegal because they don’t have the legal authority to initiate such legislation. I live in Edmonton, and during COVID hysteria I was not allowed to venture to a coffee shop, and to sit and enjoy a mug without wearing a mask. This was something I refused to abide by. So instead, I travelled outside of Edmonton’s city limits to engage in this simple act of freedom. During this period, I routinely travelled to Sherwood Park where I was free to sit and drink a warm coffee unmasked.

So, how did the province respond to these rouge mask-obsessed cities? Premier Kenny FORCED the cities to remove their mask bylaws. And they did.

Now we’re in a similar happenstance. Why hasn’t Danielle Smith removed the illegal plastics ban in these cities? Why are private citizens (like the Friends of Calgary) being forced to challenge these tyrannical oversteps by dictatorial mayors when it is the Premier's responsibility? Why should citizens have to waste their time and money to stop a municipality from illegally targeting them? Where the hell is the province and their elected MLA representation?

The UCP under Danielle Smith is enabling a Trudeau-ian style plastics ban. All the while she talks tough on how she is against him. Yeah, she is against Federal intrusion in provincial jurisdiction (usually, which is good), but she also seems to agree with the content of Trudeau’s bill (provincially, which is bad). She is politically sly and allows liberal cities to shield her from conservative wrath.

So here we sit, Edmontonians are at the mercy of a despotic mayor, who is forcefully pushing Trudeau’s green hatred upon us. And Calgarians are finally vexing their mayor only after paying a considerable personal cost to their time and money. Danielle? Why are you allowing Trudeau’s policies to be illegally enacted municipally?

I would suggest that when you have the legal authority to remove an injustice, and yet you don’t, it is because you support it.

Is Danielle just a provincial Trudeau in a skirt?

Remove the bylaw already!

Or maybe I'm just crazy,

ABE
